DIY Do It Yourself rock Variant Cause

When a band starts trying to think about live shows, they wonder how to get a gig. And some groups get real annoyed at not being given a shot to bestow their beautiful music on the world. But a club owner and the person booking the club have their own problems and bills, and what they are trying to do is fill that club with people that are going to buy booze -- that is what pays their rent. Every band starts on the off nights and the opening slots, and moves ahead by proving themselves and their drawing power.

Bands fight their way to the dream jobs and then try and retain those money nights. But headlining bands are always looking over their own shoulders and trying to put opening acts on the bill that will boost the night.

We were always DIY-- Do It Yourself -- and we built up our fan base with parties and mailing lists and aggressive promoting.

If a group can draw 30 to 50 people on an off night, they're going to start moving up to the better nights. If a group can draw 75 to 100 people other headliners will start considering them as weekend openers. If a band can draw 100 to 150 people then they can command co-bill status and a little more of the money. And if a local band can consistently draw 300 or 400-plus people then they are going to be able to take whatever nights they want in clubs of that size.
