Variant Cause the Young Pioneers the Fastbacks UCT Hall Lower Queen Anne

Variant Cause was first formed in 1985. We were not new to the scene, Mark and I had been playing in original groups for six years -- starting with Sweet Madness in Spokane -- and Greg had been playing with us for three years, in Next Exit and Koo Dot Tah and other side trips.

We had already been working on a new sound for the last few years and were really starting to bring it all together. We were trying to retain rock & roll roots but twist it up and try and take it to a new place. Now our goal was to reel in our side projects and to focus on the live band and that sound: Variant Cause.

After changing our name to Variant Cause and finding our new bass player, we set to work. With Ryco worked in and a strong set of songs worked up, we were ready to jump back into gigging.

We managed to retain quite a bit of the local draw we'd built up in our previous band, and we started working towards the weekend gigs while writing and recording new material. At that time there were very few all-ages venue. This was one of those short-lived venues in the shadow of the Space Needle. I think this is the first live gig using the name Variant Cause.
